My name is Arisa and I just moved to Cairns from Japan.
I really enjoy keeping in touch with my friends using social media.
In Japan most of my friends have their own smartphone or tablet, however my parents do not want me to have my own yet due to the distractions and concerns of becoming addicted.
I have studied about social media and now I want to share what I have learnt with you. Hope you enjoy!!!
What is Social Media?
âWhat is Social Media?â This page is for people who donât know much about Social media and the benefits it can bring to the community.
I hope that this will help you to understand the importance of social media and the benefits it can give you, but I also want to warn you about the dangers it can have.
Social media is the collective of online communication channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration.
Here are some prominent examples of social media
Facebook is a popular free social networking website that allows registered users to create profiles, upload photos and video, send messages and keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues. According to statistics from the Nielsen Group, Internet users within the United States spend more time on Facebook than any other website.
Twitter is a free microblogging service that allows registered members to broadcast short posts called tweets. Twitter members can broadcast tweets and follow other usersâ tweets by using multiple platforms and devices.
âLooks like lots of people are using social media at night!â
I this graph thereâs 58% that are using social media in the evening. If you use your phone/computer for a long time, you will become addicted.
âI think itâs not a good idea to spend too much time using social media. It can harm your health too.â
As you can see, most people have a Facebook account. Instagram , LinkedIn Snapchat are other popular forms of social media.
It shows that women use social media more than men.

- It Helps Teach Social Skills
- It Increases Connectivity
- Itâs a Fast Way to Distribute Content
Negatives
- Bullying
- Addiction

Addiction
For example When someone sends an emails to you, you start to feel happy and canât stop sending emails back. That is called Addiction. In your brain there is a function called nucleus acumens. When somebody reacts to your postings, the nucleus acumens work because it is like receiving an unexpected reward, you feel happy and try to get more and more positive responses.
You become addicted becauseâŠ
- You donât want anyone to bully you by not replying
- You want to make more friends by using social media
- You can access easily anytime anywhere
What can you do to avoid addiction?
- Discipline: Set rules when and how long you will spend on line.
- Think about something else you can do such as sport.
These are examples of unethical use:
Someone posted a photo of you and made you look REALLY weird and ugly. Everyone viewed that post or picture which could cause many fights and as a result your reaction could be very negative and spontaneous.

I think that social media is a wonderful thing! But you have to know the rules before you use it.
Now I understand that the virtual world can be dangerous if not used correctly. If I receive a call from someone I do not know, I will be careful and follow the rules.
